A secret - and huge - benefit to the airlines from checked baggage fees is saving hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes. Checked bag fees don't represent a pure increase in revenue and they come at a cost in boarding efficiency. Ultimately checked bag fees themselves aren’t the big business that simply summing up the charges from an accounting standpoint would have you believe. airlines are saving $375 million in taxes. At $5 billion a year in checked bag fees U.S. By moving bag fees out of the price of a ticket airlines are able pocket a huge tax savings. However the excise tax doesn’t apply to fees. There’s an excise tax of 7.5% on domestic airline tickets. They have to schedule flights when passengers want to fly.īig Profit in Checked Bag Fees Comes From Tax Arbitrage ![]() That’s because an airline can't simply push their schedule later into the night. Southwest’s CEO claimed “It would cost us approximately 8 to 10 airplanes of flying per day if we were to add just a couple of minutes of block time to each flight in our schedule.” Just a few minutes added onto each flight generates huge costs. A minute or two gets added on to deplaning an aircraft, too. Then airline staff have to spend a couple of minutes moving gate-checked bags to the belly of the plane. Passengers spend time trying to find overhead space, and when bins are full return to the front of the plane to have their bags tagged and taken. Gate checked bags add a few minutes to the boarding process. Slower boarding means less efficient use of aircraft and more delays, which can cost airlines nearly as much as they’re taking in in bag fees. Passengers carry on more bags because they'd have to pay to check them. Southwest Airlines, which doesn't charge fees for each passenger to check up to two bags, even thinks they make more money not charging checked baggage fees.Ĭhecked Bag Fees Come At a Big Cost to the Airlines Clearly some of the checked bag fees represent money that would likely have been part of the fare before. On average the total cost of a trip, airfare plus fees, is no higher today than when a fee for each passenger's first checked bag fees was introduced by American Airlines in May 2008. While some passengers - usually business travelers - are price insensitive, checked bag fees disproportionately fall on more price sensitive leisure travelers who take longer trips, check more bags, and are less likely to be exempt from the charges due to frequent flyer elite status. Passengers checking bags aren’t suddenly willing to spend more for air travel than they were before. Apply online today to join the PSA family. ![]() Players can use their characters and cars at both the arcade and home. But if Sega can manage to integrate the arcade experience with the home console version, it would actually make the game more popular. Wouldn't making this game risk the sales of Arcade Stage? On the surface of the subject, it would. DLC Market: Allow players to purchase new content (new cars, courses, or avatars) and set up a market to allow players to trade/buy/sell their tuned cars for D Coins/Points. Wheel Compatibility: All Logitech, Thrustmaster, and Fanatec wheels should work with the game. Synced Data- Home console version and arcade version should share the same data (allows players to use same profile and car both at arcade and home) All courses that Initial D has raced on: Arcade Stage 8 currently is still missing Real Usui, Eina, Shomaru, Yabitsu, and Maze. Legend of the Streets- Race against other racers to prove who is the best of all. Improve upon the laggy lobbies from Extreme Stage. Online lobbies- allow players to race against random players or people they choose. The game should be a port of Initial D Arcade Stage 8 with additional contents such as: Story Mode- Complete story from the beginning of the manga to the end. If the game is successful, they can translate and release the game out into other regions. Sega can release the game in Japan and Asia regions first to test market. Additionally, PS3 and X360 will be 10+ years old. If Sega releases this game by 2020, there will be much more players on PS4 and XBone. I understand there are more fans with last generation consoles (Wii, PS3, X360), but because PS4 and XBone support Direct X 11, the game can be more cost and time efficient to develope simultaneously. How should Sega implement this game? The game should be released on Playstation 4 and Xbox One to support current generation consoles. With the recent releases of Final Stage, Arcade Stage 8, and the upcoming movie, Initial D can spike its popularity with an addition of a home console game by letting fans take home and play a game based on what they love. ![]() The reason fans fell in love with Initial D was because of its story line, not just the cars, tracks, and gameplay. Fans expected the quality of Extreme Stage to be on par or even better than Initial D Special Stage, but instead was greeted with a mediocre port of Arcade Stage 4 Kai. Why should Sega make this game? Initial D Extreme Stage fell short of praise back in 2008 because there was a lack of story mode and additional contents. I'm tired of waiting on Sega and want to let them know that now is the right time to make this game. The reason behind this petition Fans have been eagerly waiting for Sega to announce a home console version of Initial D Arcade Stage since the release of Arcade Stage 5 in 2009. Why should you support this petition? Are you a fan of Initial D or Arcade Stage series? If yes, then you should support this petition because I believe that Sega can deliver us a true quality Initial D game for home consoles again like it's a "love letter" written to Initial D fans throughout the world. ![]() These were dated 9th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 19th and 23rd November 1993. Although his theory of positive disintegration is highly relevant to understanding existential depression-as well as many other issues-I myself did not become aware of Dabrowski’s work until about 10 years ago.īut long before I knew about Dabrowski’s theory, I knew about and understood existential depression. Nonetheless, he remains largely unknown in North America, despite his many publications and even though he was friends with prominent psychologists such as Maslow and Mowrer. ![]() I will focus my discussion here on characteristics of people, especially the gifted, that may lead them to spontaneous existential depression, relate these to Dabrowski’s theory of positive disintegration, as well as to other psychological theories, and then discuss some specific ways to manage existential depression.Ī Polish psychiatrist and psychologist, Kazimierz Dabrowski worked and wrote prolifically about his ideas in the years from 1929 until his death in 1980, living part of his life in the United States and in Canada, as well as in Europe. Whether existential depression and its resulting disintegration become positive or whether they stay negative depends on many factors. Sadly, sometimes the outcome of this process may lead to chronic breakdown and disintegration. ![]() In Dabrowski’s approach, individuals who “fall apart” must find some way to “put themselves back together again,” either by reintegrating at their previous state or demonstrating growth by reintegrating at a new and higher level of functioning. This spontaneous existential depression is also, I believe, typically associated with the disintegration experiences referred to by Dabrowski (Daniels & Piechowski, 2009 Mendaglio, 2008a). They become keenly aware of their smallness in the larger picture of existence, and they feel helpless to fix the many problems that trouble them. This kind of sensitive awareness and idealism makes them more likely to ask themselves difficult questions about the nature and purpose of their lives and the lives of those around them. People who are bright are usually more intense, sensitive, and idealistic, and they can see the inconsistencies and absurdities in the values and behaviors of others (Webb, Gore, Amend, & DeVries, 2007). It has been my experience that gifted and talented persons are more likely than those who are less gifted to experience spontaneous existential depression as an outgrowth of their mental and emotional abilities and interactions with others. While not universal, the experience of existential depression can challenge an individual’s very survival and represents both a great challenge and at the same time an opportunity-an opportunity to seize control over one’s life and turn the experience into a positive life lesson-an experience leading to personality growth. For other people, the experience of existential depression seemingly arises spontaneously it stems from their own perception of life, their thoughts about the world and their place in it, as well as the meaning of their life. Their ordeal highlights for them the transient nature of life and the lack of control that we have over so many events, and it raises questions about the meaning of our lives and our behaviors. When people undergo a great trauma or other unsettling event-they have lost a job or a loved one dies, for example-their understanding of themselves or of their place in the world often disintegrates, and they temporarily “fall apart,” experiencing a type of depression referred to as existential depression. ![]() If you face reality too much, it kills you.
